On 14 April, Anna-Karin Hatt was announced as the nominee for the next party leader of ALDE Party member Centerpartiet in Sweden.

The party’s central electoral committee confirmed Hatt received the most nominations from party members and she will now be subject to a vote at the upcoming extraordinary Congress on 3 May in Stockholm.

“I want to lead a party that takes responsibility for Sweden. With its green liberal power, Centerpartiet contributes to stability, a long-term approach and faith in the future for the whole country. Firmly rooted in the conviction that we humans, individually and together, can create fantastic things, if society takes its responsibility to give every person the right conditions. I am prepared to take that responsibility. And I think the Centre Party should take that responsibility,” said Hatt.

Boasting extensive experience in politics and business, Hatt played a crucial role in Centerpartiet’s modern history, working closely with several of its party leaders and serving as the party’s chief negotiator in coalition governments.

She served in two consecutive Swedish governments, first as Minister for IT and Regional Affairs between 2010-11, and then as Minister for IT and Energy between 2011-14.

“Hatt is the candidate the Centre Party wants and needs. Her experience has given her a deep understanding and ability to achieve results for Sweden. But also deep knowledge of economics, entrepreneurship, rural development, green transition and Swedish self-sufficiency. Issues that are important for Sweden, but also issues that are incredibly important for Centerpartiet,” said Anders Åkesson, chair of the party’s electoral commission.

The electoral committee also proposed that Rickard Nordin and Ulrika Heie be elected as first and second vice-chair respectively.
