European liberals welcome the European Commission’s Clean Industrial Deal as it sets the right priorities: boosting a competitive and innovative business environment, strengthening partnerships with likeminded countries and staying committed to the EU’s climate goals.

However, we believe that only a smart, practical approach can deliver tangible results efficiently and effectively.

Announced on 26 February, the Clean Industrial Deal is a strategic plan to boost the EU’s competitiveness, invest in clean and strategic technologies, and support energy-intensive industries, all while staying on track with ambitious climate goals.

The strategy also aims to strengthen the EU’s global position amid growing competition from China and the US.

The plan focuses on six key "business drivers":

  • Lowering energy costs and expanding access to affordable green energy
  • Creating demand for decarbonised goods and clean technologies
  • Encouraging investment
  • Securing access to essential raw materials
  • Strengthening global partnerships
  • Upskilling and reskilling workers

To drive these efforts and establish the EU as a global leader in the clean and circular economy, the EU will also focus on key enablers like cutting red tape, using the full potential of the single market, aligning policies at both EU and national levels, and promoting high-quality jobs.

ALDE Party Vice-President and Estonia’s Minister of Climate Yoko Alender (Reformierakond, EE) highlighted the core priorities of the Clean Industrial Deal, emphasising the need for innovation, efficiency, and a secure, competitive energy future.

“What do we expect from the Clean Industrial Deal? We expect hope, we expect competitiveness. What does it consist of? It means less bureaucracy and red tape; it means innovation; and it means energy. As a Climate Minister, for me energy should be secure, protect critical infrastructure, and be affordable to create the best price for our European businesses and people. And also of course clean, because the European living environment is the best in the world,” said Alender.
