On 14-15 April, the European Liberal Forum held its Spring General Assembly in Budapest against a backdrop of rising protests against the Hungarian government's recent decision to ban Pride events.

ALDE Party Vice-President Eva Kjer Hansen (Venstre, DK) joined ELF leadership in support of protesters from our member party Momentum Mozgalom and the wider Hungarian civil society opposing Viktor Orbán’s latest attack on the LGBTQIA+ community.

ELF President Jan-Christoph Oetjen MEP (FDP, DE) outlined the main aspects of ELF’s organisational strategy for the next five years, adopted by members during the General Assembly.

“This place shouldn’t be the symbol of defeat but a symbol of our determination, courage, and willingness to fight for our values and the security and well-being of the European people. In the next five years, ELF must be a leader in liberal thought, a bridge builder between different organisations, and a force for strengthening liberalism and liberal organisations all across Europe,” said Oetjen.

ELF also welcomed in its family two political foundations of ALDE Party members: the Liberal Democratic Institute (Laisves partija, LT) and the Progressive Institute (Progressive Slovakia, SK).
