Venstre pinpointed freedom, security and Norway’s accession to the EU as key priorities in their general election programme ahead of the country’s parliamentary elections on 8 September.
At a party Congress in Lillestrøm on 7-9 March, party members adopted all sections of the electoral programme and re-elected the party leadership.
Guri Melby, Venstre leader since 2020, has been elected for a further two-year term with Sveinung Rotevatn and Abid Q. Raja acting as deputy leaders.
ALDE Party Secretary General Didrik de Schaetzen addressed participants reaffirming our Norwegian party’s strong pro-European ties.
In a keynote speech, Melby warned that with Donald Trump's re-election, Putin's full-scale invasion of Ukraine and a trade war on the horizon, Norway should further align with the EU through an accession referendum in the next parliamentary term.
“Venstre is campaigning for a new course for Norway - a course that ensures climate cuts, knowledge, a strong business community and a safer Europe. Norway needs a new majority and a new government with Venstre to take the country forward and together give people more freedom and security,” said Melby in her speech to delegates.
Melby highlighted five main initiatives that Venstre is committing to tackle in its future policies:
- Achieve climate goals and protect Norwegian nature
- Support entrepreneurs and prevent capital flight out of Norway
- Help families fight against poverty and exclusion
- Ensure all students can read, write and be free from bullying
- Ensure Norway becomes a full member of the EU
