Renew Europe warned that the EU can no longer rely on traditional alliance for its own security during a European Parliament Plenary debate on 11 March.

Highlighting recent actions by the United States under Donald Trump –  from supporting a Russian-led UN resolution against Ukraine to halting arms deliveries – Renew Europe President Valérie Hayer MEP declared that the EU can no longer rely on traditional alliances for its security.

“Our world is becoming increasingly hostile, and we must draw two conclusions: we must be able to defend ourselves, and we must protect our democratic model. That means investing in European defense, working towards a common loan for military spending, and ensuring our armies can operate together. Without European preference, there is no strategic autonomy - and no sovereignty,” said Hayer.

Hayer also called to increase military aid to Ukraine, including potential deployment of European troops for future peacekeeping operations, and called for a strict enforcement of EU laws against foreign interference.

“The security of Ukrainians is our security. Trump’s decision to stop arms deliveries only reminds us of one thing: we must take our destiny into our own hands. Europe has all the assets to be a true political and military power: it is time to embrace this role,” she said.
