Founded in 2012 as “NEOS - The New Austria”, the party ran in the 2013 legislative elections in an alliance with “Liberal Forum”. The alliance won 9 seats and resulted in a merger between the parties named NEOS. Since then, the party has had a steady rise in national support, winning 15 seats in the 2019 snap elections and 18 in the 2024 elections with a record 9.1% of the popular vote. In 2015, the party joined a coalition government for the first time in its history, with leader Beate Meinl-Reisinger appointed as Austria's Minister of Foreign Affairs.
