On 19 November, European Commissioner for Democracy, Justice, the Rule of Law, and Consumer Protection Michael McGrath attended Renew Europe CoR’s first meeting of the new 2025-30 mandate in Brussels.
In a dialogue with members, Commissioner McGrath presented his portfolio covering a broad range of issues, from democratic resilience and disinformation to consumer protection, security and geopolitical threats.
Renew Europe CoR members enquired about plans to set up a dedicated agency to combat threats posed by extremism, online hate and terrorism on social media, as well as the security risks posed by Chinese technology and social media platforms such as TikTok.
Members also warned of threats to the rule of law in Europe and the importance of defending European democratic values especially in vulnerable regions, where fear of the war in Ukraine escalating beyond its border is a daily worry for European citizens.
Commissioner McGrath’s participation highlighted the EU’s commitment to closer cooperation with local and regional authorities.
