On 21-23 March, the Liberal Democrats held their annual Spring Conference in Harrogate, United Kingdom.
Party members adopted a range of policies to promote UK science and technological innovation, supporting the LGBTQIA+ community on their path to equal rights and standing firm against Trump’s unpredictability and Putin’s aggression.
The Lib Dems’ plan commits to a strong UK on the world stage defending security, rebuilding ties with the EU and leading on trade, democracy and climate action.
In a keynote speech, party leader Ed Davey argued the way to deal with Trump is from a position of strength, not weakness: that means negotiating a new UK-EU customs union as a first step to repair trading ties.
“When it comes to dealing with Trump – as with the other looming threats in the world right now – it is our liberal belief in internationalism that offers the solution. With Trump in the White House and [Nigel] Farage leading a Trump tribute act here in the UK, our role in British politics has never been more essential. Our precious liberal values are the only antidote to their destructive nationalism. Our trademark community politics is the only way to defeat their cynical populism,” said Davey.
