On 5 April, Liberal Movement members discussed financing Lithuania's defence and tax policy and strengthening the resilience of democracy at a party convention.
The event in Vilnius was attended by party leadership, members, representatives of the Seimas group and guests - experts in politics, economics and international relations.
In her opening speech, party leader Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen stressed the importance of identifying the ideological, military and economic threats to democracy.
"We need to restore respect for the facts. This is a goal worthy of liberals. Yes, it is an ambitious task at a time when it is increasingly difficult to distinguish reality from fiction, objective facts from manipulation, when a large number of people, driven by fatigue and information overload, want very simple solutions to complex problems,” said Čmilytė-Nielsen.
In a discussion on the liberal position on defence funding and tax policy, moderated by Simonas Gentvilas MP, experts analysed how to ensure the resilience of the state in the face of war, what solutions are necessary to prepare society to withstand the challenges, and how to develop a responsible and pro-growth tax policy.
The panellists unanimously stressed the need not only to be realistic about the threats, but also to communicate clearly to the public.
