On 21 December, ALDE Party member Viðreisn (Liberal Reform Party) entered into government in Iceland with the Social Democratic Party and the People’s Party.

Icelandic liberals will hold four ministers in the new coalition government:

  • Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir, Minister of Foreign Affairs
  • Hanna Katrín Friðriksson, Minister of Industry
  • Þorbjörg Sigríður Gunnlaugsdóttir, Minister of Justice
  • Daði Már Kristófersson, Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs

Under the coalition agreement, the three parties have committed to achieve economic stability and lower interest rates, with stronger control over state finances, and work to bring more value to the Icelandic business sector.

Moreover, a referendum on talks surrounding Iceland’s potential accession to the European Union will be held no later than 2027, a key pledge made by Viðreisn during their election campaign.

In the parliamentary elections held on 30 November last year, liberals won a record 11 seats in the Alþingi with 15.8% of the popular vote, retaining Members of Parliament in all six constituencies for the first time.
